Toon latest PL club linked to Tigre star
Newcastle are among a host of Premier League clubs interested in Mateo Retegui, according to Sitio Andino. As many as eight clubs are reportedly keeping tabs on the Argentine-born striker.
Despite being born in Buenos Aires, Retegui represents Italy and scored on his international debut against England last week. The 23-year-old followed this up with another strike in a 2-0 win over Malta.
An impressive 29 goals in 51 games for Tigre has alerted clubs from Europe. West Ham United and Serie A giants Inter Milan are two clubs named as rivals for Retegui’s signature.
Newcastle will likely be in the hunt for a striker this summer after selling Chris Wood to Nottingham Forest. As it stands, Alexander Isak and an injury-prone Callum Wilson are Eddie Howe’s only available options.
NUFC ‘pushing’ for McTominay
Football Insider claim Howe is desperate to sign Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay. Talk refuses to go away linking Newcastle with the Scotland international.
While initial reaction was mixed, fans appeared a lot more receptive to the idea following McTominay’s two goals against Spain on international duty. Bruno Guimaraes has played the deep-lying role for most of the campaign and signing another “holder” would allow him to play further forward.
The report suggests McTominay is on Erik ten Hag’s list for potential departures as he prepares his own summer overhaul at Old Trafford. Casemiro has restricted the 26-year-old’s first-team opportunities and Newcastle could offer an ideal way out.
Similarly to the striker situation, offloading Jonjo Shelvey to Forest has left the Magpies light in midfield. Four players are competing for three spots in Howe’s engine room so reinforcements are top of the summer shopping list.
