Newcastle United transfer rumours: James Maddison update, de Vrij link and Youri Tielemans 'bid'

Your Newcastle United transfer round-up for Monday, September 26.

More Maddison talk

Newcastle are plotting a second attempt to sign Leicester City midfielder James Maddison, according to Football Insider. The Magpies had two failed attempts to sign the 25-year-old in the summer, with Alexander Isak’s £58million arrival eventually breaking the transfer record.

Toon chiefs refused to stump up the Foxes’ reported £60million demands for a player with two years on his contract. Leicester may be forced to accept a reduced offer as Maddison’s contract enters its final 18 months in January.

A move may be more appealing to the midfielder now Brendan Rodgers’ side sitting rock-bottom of the Premier League. Despite the poor run, Maddison has still impressed - bagging three goals from six appearances.

Double Dutch

Reports in Italy claim Newcastle are plotting a move for Stefan de Vrij. Just three months after signing Sven Botman, the Magpies are targeting another Dutch centre-back.

Four successful years in Italy appear heading to an end as the 30-year-old’s contract expires in May. Newcastle will be able to approach the player in January over a potential free transfer.

Inter Milan signed de Vrij - who has 58 caps for the Netherlands - on a free transfer in 2018. He helped il Nerazzurri win the Serie A title under Antonio Conte last year and would bring vast experience to Eddie Howe’s squad.

Jones ‘key’ to Tielemans

The Mirror are reporting that Newcastle will lodge a £15million bid for Youri Tielemans. Leicester also risk losing another star midfielder on the cheap as his contract is up at the end of the season.

Arsenal were another Premier League club keeping tabs on Tielemans but the Magpies believe Graeme Jones could be key to striking a deal. The first-team coach reportedly had a positive relationship with the 25-year-old when the two worked together for Belgium.

Jones served as Roberto Martinez’s understudy, a role he also fulfilled at Wigan Athletic and Swansea City. The piece suggests the Gateshead-born coach could be the ace up Newcastle’s sleeves in any attempt to sign Tielemans.
