Newcastle United transfer rumours: Florian Wirtz linked with Toon as Barcelona struggle for funds

A look at the latest Newcastle United transfer rumours on Wednesday, March 22.

Newcastle United handed Florian Wirtz boost

Newcastle United have been handed a potential transfer boost after Florian Wirtz was told a move to Barcelona would be highly unlikely, according to Sky Germany. The La Liga side side are suffering from crippling financial problems which are set to continue this summer.

Barca have been told they won't be able to sign any new players unless the can sell £178million of talent. Frenkie De Jong remains the most attractive asset the club have, with Manchester United still reportedly keen on the Dutch international, but he wants to stay in Spain.

“As of today, Barcelona doesn’t have any room in its budget to spend in the upcoming transfer window,” La Liga chief Javier Tebas said at the recent Financial Times’ Business of Football summit. The Catalan club has been linked with a move for Wirtz, with Newcastle also reportedly tracking the young midfielder.

“Wirtz is going to be the best player in Germany ever, I think,” according to former Schalke and Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Simon Cziommer. “You can write that down. He’ll be much better than Kai Havertz in any case. At a young age he has all the skills to play between the lines, to find the right solution and excel in the small spaces.

“(He has) a good shot, good link-up play, he’s strong one on one. He’s a real number ten.”

Newcastle told they have the money to lure James Maddison to Tyneside

Former West Ham frontman Frank McAvennie believes Newcastle have the money to lure James Maddison to Tyneside after an influential role at Leicester City.

“They have got the money to get him," McAvennie told Football Insider. “I think Maddison is a great player. He makes Leicester tick, it is as clear as day.

“When he is not in the team they are not the same. That for me shows that he is the talent that everyone thinks he is.

“It will cost a lot of money but they have got that kind of money to go and spend.“
