Newcastle United transfer rumours as Magpies told to sign 'next Kieran Trippier' in January

Here are your Newcastle United transfer rumours on Sunday, October 16.

Newcastle United told to sign 'next Kieran Trippier' as 'price-cut' revealed

BBC pundit Noel Whelan has suggested that Newcastle United should try to sign Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw to become the club's 'next Kieran Trippier'.

The 27-year-old is entering the last 18 months left on his contract with the Red Devils and would 'become a better player' under manager Eddie Howe's tutelage, Whelan suggests.

After the success of Tripper, who signed for the Magpies from Atletico Madrid in January earlier this year, Whelan believes Shaw could have something of a career resurgence after his stagnant form under Erik ten Hag so far this season.

While current first-team full-back Matt Targett signed a four-year deal in the summer, it's reported that the Newcastle backroom staff see Shaw as an upgrade and would jump at the chance to sign him if United were willing to let him go.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan believes Ten Hag is considering replacing Shaw, especially after signing Dutch left-back Tyrell Malacia in the summer.

“It’s one of the positions that Erik ten Hag is pondering over. He’s thinking about possibly signing another full-back, he doesn’t know who the best option is.

“I think with the way they did it with Trippier, bringing in that experience and quality – they’ll be happy to repeat that success. It’s down to the manager as well.

"I think if you get him playing under Eddie Howe, he’d become a better player. It’d be exciting, it makes sense – and having that kind of experience is invaluable for a club like Newcastle.”

Newcastle target could be punished by West Ham over contract refusal

Newcastle United target Harrison Ashby could be being punished by West Ham after his absence from their 2-2 draw against Blackburn Rovers Under-23s in their Premier League 2 match yesterday.

The 20-year-old wanted a move to St. James' Park in the summer after a £2.5 million bid was sent in by the Magpies but the move was rejected by the Hammers.

According to Six Foot Two, who are reliable West Ham insiders, the young defender is refusing to sign a new deal and is now being left out of crucial matches for the Irons' Under-23s side.

Their academy team currently sits bottom of the Premier League 2 Division 1 after drawing just two of their first nine matches while losing the other seven.

Ashby was key to West Ham Under-23s success last season, which included a 2nd place finish in the Premier League 2 Division 1, after netting two goals and recording seven assists in 21 appearances.

If Ashby continues to refuse to sign a new contract, he could be one of Eddie Howe's first targets in the January transfer window when it opens in just over two months time.
