A round-up of the latest Newcastle United transfer rumours on Sunday, 9 October.
Newcastle 'eye cut-price' Luke Shaw approach
Football Insider claims Newcastle United will make a cut-price move to sign England left-back Luke Shaw. The Manchester United defender is out of contract this summer and has struggled to cement his place in the Red Devils starting XI.
Manchester United do have the option to extend his deal for a further 12 months, but Shaw has been frozen out of the squad and finds himself on the fringes. The left-back was one of the standout performers for his country as England reached the Euro2020 final, scoring against Italy in the Wembley showpiece.
However, injuries have plagued his Manchester United career. Newcastle are reportedly set to monitor his situation at Old Trafford this summer.
Brendan Rodgers accepts James Maddison interest as Leicester prepare for Newcastle United bid
Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers is braced for another approach for James Maddison in January. Newcastle United failed with two attempts to sign the highly-rated 25-year-old in the summer.
The second bid - understood to be slightly north of £40million - was laughed off by Rodgers, with the Foxes boss suggesting the fee offered would not buy “three quarters” of Maddison's left leg. Despite constant speculation, the midfielder has continued to excel in a dysfunctional Leicester side this season.
Five goals and two assists in 2022-23 has triggered debate nationwide about whether Gareth Southgate should take him to the World Cup next month. A match-winning performance against Nottingham Forest on Monday saw Maddison - who has 18 months left on his current deal - score two superb goals to lift Leicester from the foot of the table.
Newcastle have Financial Fair Play aid that could save millions and find right transfer targets
Eddie Howe has revealed that data can help Newcastle United save a lot of time 'looking at players that maybe you shouldn't be' as the Magpies continue planning for January and beyond.
Data has become a huge part of the game today and you only have to look at Brentford, Newcastle's opponents on Saturday, to realise that. Rasmus Ankersen, Brentford's co-director of football, once said 'If David wants to beat Goliath, you can’t do that by using the same weapons' and the Bees have certainly thought outside the box in recent years with their use of numbers.
Whether it is recruitment, set-pieces, tactical statistics or, even, personally adjusted sleep programmes, Brentford have been at the forefront of football's data revolution. If Newcastle are to upset the established order in the coming years, then, the Magpies are also going to have to be particularly smart. Financial Fair Play restrictions, after all, make signing the right players and characters so important as costly mistakes could impact what Newcastle can spend in the years to come.
