Newcastle United transfer rumours as Magpies are told Fabian Ruiz fee

Here are your Newcastle United transfer rumours on Thursday, February 3.

Newcastle told Ruiz fee

Newcastle United have been told that they would have to pay around £40million to sign Fabian Ruiz in the summer.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the Magpies have been linked with a move for the Spanish midfielder and Napoli reportedly demand a significant fee to prize him away from the club.

This is after Newcastle spent roughly £93million on five additions in January as Chris Wood, Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimarares, Dan Burn and Matt Targett all made the move to St James' Park.

With the exception of Targett, who joined on loan until the end of the season from Aston Villa, the other four have made the switch on a permanent basis and will be hoping they can help steer the Magpies to safety.

However, if they do stay up, Eddie Howe will no doubt be wanting to further strengthen his squad and Ruiz is someone who they could look at given his experience and qualities.

During his time at Napoli, Ruiz has scored 20 goals in 150 appearances since joining from Real Betis in 2017.

Clough explains Longstaff role

Nigel Clough is hoping Matty Longstaff can add an extra dimension to Mansfield Town's midfield after he made the loan move from Newcastle United on deadline day.

The 21-year-old has struggled for game time at the Magpies under Eddie Howe and has now joined the Stags after returning from a loan spell at Aberdeen.

Clough told The Courier : "We certainly weren’t at our best and I’m glad we brought some players in before the transfer window closed to freshen things up.

"We were well off it in the first half. Ollie Clarke gave lots of free-kicks away just through fatigue and it was the same with George Maris and Ryan Stirk in midfield – they were nowhere near as good as they have been.

"The chance to get Matty Longstaff in came pretty late in the afternoon. He was lined up to go somewhere else, but it didn’t happen.

"We got a shout to see if we wanted to take him and he wants to play because he went to Aberdeen and didn’t play as much as he’d have liked.

"Hopefully, he can supplement our midfield and give us that bit of quality that might have been the difference against Harrogate."
