Newcastle United transfer rumours as Christian Eriksen linked with Premier League return

Here are your Newcastle United transfer rumours on Tuesday, January 18.

Eriksen linked with Newcastle switch

Newcastle United have reportedly joined the race to sign former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen.

The 29-year-old has been linked with a return to the Premier League and the Times have claimed that the Magpies are one of three Premier League clubs showing interest in him.

It is understood that Brentford are in talks with Eriksen and have offered him a deal until the end of the season with the option of a further year, while the report states that Leicester City are also keen.

Eriksen hasn't featured since suffering a cardiac arrest during Denmark's Euro 2020 clash with Finland last summer.

However, the Danish international is now fit and available despite being released by Inter Milan as Italian rules do not allow someone to play with an implanted cardioverter defibrillator.

Eriksen would be able to sign on a free transfer and he could be a useful addition to Eddie Howe's squad given the experience he's gained across his career.

With 69 goals in 305 appearances at Tottenham, there's no surprise that he has had offers from a number of clubs and he could supposedly made a final decision on his destination by the end of the week.

Newcastle 'launch Zapata bid'

Newcastle United have supposedly launched a bid to sign Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata in a bid to further bolster their attacking options this month.

Chris Wood became the Magpies' second signing of the window last Thursday and was brought in to add extra firepower after the injury to Callum Wilson.

However, according to the Daily Record, the Magpies are keen to do more business as they try to stay in the Premier League and have offered £25m for the Colombia international.

The report states that Zapata has been identified as the man who could score the goals to keep Newcastle in the top-flight after netting 65 goals in 118 appearances for the Serie A side.

Atalanta are also willing to sell the 30-year-old, who has 18 months left on his current contract and could be available for a cut-price in January.

Gosens linked with Newcastle move

Newcastle United are set to make a swoop for Atalanta left-back Robin Gosens this month.

That's according to Sky Italia, who suggest the Magpies want to test the Serie A club's resolve before the January window closes with a bid for the German international.

Gosens has been linked with a move to the Premier League after impressing at Atalanta and with Germany, where he was one of the standout performers at Euro 2020 last summer.

However, the 27-year-old has been out since September after suffering a serious tear in his quadricep and is yet to return to full fitness following the issue.

He has been capped 13 times for his country and played an integral role in Atalanta's third-place finish last season which booked them a place in the Champions League for the second time in their history.
