Newcastle United transfer plans could change after Jonjo Shelvey injury says Eddie Howe

Eddie Howe has said Newcastle United must reflect on Jonjo Shelvey's injury woe before making any big decisions on their transfer plans.

The former Liverpool player was injured after the Rayo Vallecano friendly and ruled out for up to "six to eight weeks" according to the Toon boss. It leaves Newcastle light on midfielders and were they to suffer any further blows in the midfield engine room, Howe would have a tricky situation on his hands.

When asked on his transfer plans after the Shelvey injury, Howe said: "That is something we are reflecting on and analysing on a daily basis. We will have a look at it, it's a forever changing thing day to day. I don't think it has forced any immediate decision."

Speaking on Shelvey's injury blow and subsequent assessment, Howe added: "He's disappointed. He's a passionate guy. He lives for football and the feeling of playing, showing his skills on a weekly basis.

"That's a big driver and when he's not able to do that it's a big thing taken away from him. "We're supporting him and he's a lot more positive about the future now. "It's not a long-term injury so he can very easily get through his rehab."

Newcastle will assess Callum Wilson ahead of the game against Leeds after he returned from illness.

Howe, speaking at his Press conference, said today: "Callum has improved and trained with us yesterday. So he's in a better place. Injury wise we are without Jonjo and Emil Krafth. "We have a couple of other niggles in the squad. But hopefully we have the majority of players training today."
