Newcastle United transfer news: Sunderland wonderkid chased and James Maddison 'would consider' move

Your Newcastle United transfer round-up for Monday, January 2.

Red Devils want Rigg

Manchester United believe their relationship with Sunderland due to Amad Diallo will help them sign wonderkid Chris Rigg. The winger joined the Black Cats at the start of the campaign and is tearing up the Championship.

Academy product Rigg is just 15 and reports suggest Newcastle may snare him away from their local rivals. Astonishingly, the prospect - who has captained England under-16s - is already valued at £2.5million.

The Sun claim Sunderland would prefer to do business with Man United rather than the Magpies and their previous relationship with Diallo could sweeten the deal.

Pearce backs Maguire move

Stuart Pearce has listed Newcastle among a trio of top-flight clubs that should but Harry Maguire. West Ham United and Aston Villa were the other two urged to sign the 29-year-old, who has lost his place under Erik ten Hag.

He told talkSPORT: “If I were West Ham, if I were Newcastle, if I were Aston Villa, I’d be all over trying to get Harry Maguire out of there.

“I’d be asking the question of whether he’s available. He’d be a brilliant addition to a football club.

“He’s the right age, the right stature, right experience. He might just need another challenge now as he’s not getting regular football.”

Newcastle ‘attractive’ to Maddison

GiveMeSport are reporting that Newcastle will now appeal to James Maddison after two failed bids last summer. An offer as high as £45million was rejected by the Foxes in August but, with 18 months left on his contract, a move could be on the cards.

Reporter Pete O’Rourke said: “We all know the financial backing they’re going to have now and in the future, so I think for all top players it’s going to be an attractive destination for them.

“I’m sure if they do follow up their interest in James Maddison, then it’d be something he would consider, seeing how exciting the project is at Newcastle right now.”
