Newcastle United transfer gossip amid Christian Pulisic, Marco Asensio and Gaetan Laborde links

Your Newcastle United transfer rumour round-up for Tuesday, August 16.

No decision on Pulisic

Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano insists no decision has been made on Christian Pulisic’s future but interest from Newcastle is genuine. Reports have linked the Magpies with moves for the American and fellow Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Speaking to Que Golazo, he said: “There has been interest from Newcastle. They already approached people close to Pulisic in June, but at the moment, from Chelsea, there is no decision made on him.

“Also, they can’t sell all their players. Timo Werner, Romelu Lukaku (both left) and I think (Callum) Hudson-Odoi is going to leave the club in the next few days with many, many clubs interested in him.

“So before selling or loaning out all the players, they need to find some solution internally or new signings, and so this is why at the moment for Pulisic, there is still nothing imminent. A lot of interest, but nothing imminent. And I wouldn’t be surprised if he stays at Chelsea this season.”

Carlo on Marco

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has admitted he is unsure whether Marco Asensio will remain at the club. Earlier in the window, Newcastle were touted as a possible destination for the 26-year-old.

“He is a Madrid player and I consider him as such,” Ancelotti told Spanish media. “If he deserves to play, he will play. You have to remember the goals he scored and what he did last season. We have to wait until August 31 to know what happens and what he decides, so we will see.”

Toon ‘back in’ for striker

French outlet Foot Mercato are reporting that the Magpies are “back in” for Rennes striker Gaetan Laborde. According to the piece, Toon chiefs wanted the 28-year-old in January.

Chris Wood was the striker Newcastle ultimately signed but he has proven a flop in front of goal so far. Laborde scored last weekend to open his account for 2022-23 as Rennes drew 1-1 with Monaco.
