Newcastle United told they have advantage over Arsenal in race for 'box office' signing

Newcastle United have been told they may hold an advantage over Arsenal in the race to sign Mykhaylo Mudryk in January. The young Ukrainian is valued in the region of €100million, with Shakhtar Donetsk claiming the forward is higher valued than the fee Manchester United paid for Antony in the recent summer window.

Mikel Arteta's Arsenal have also been linked with a move for the highly rated 21-year-old, who has not hidden his desire to join the Gunners. However, with such a large transfer fee, it remains to be seen whether Arsenal or Newcastle would part money for a relatively untested youngster.

Both parties would have to comply with Financial Fair Play demands and given the arrival of Alexander Isak in the summer, it's difficult to see a way around that for the Magpies. Nonetheless, former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie believes Eddie Howe may just have the upper hand in the race to sign the Ukrainian talent.

“I can see Arteta wanting someone like Mudryk in there but they are a young team,” he told Football Insider.

“Newcastle are going forwards. Somebody like Mudryk would be a great name for the north-east, they would absolutely love it.

“I can see it happening – Mudryk is Eddie Howe’s kind of player. He would not be going there just for the money. I can understand any manager wanting to bring him in. I would love to see him in the Premier League.“
