Newcastle United told 'no reason' not to finish in top four after Manchester United win

Shay Given has told Newcastle United that there is "no reason" they cannot finish in the top for four after they beat Manchester United 2-0 at St James' Park.

Roared onto victory as every by the home crowd, Eddie Howe's side rose to the occasion against Man United. In what was arguably the most important game of the season so far - at least in the league - the Magpies turned on the style.

Erik ten Hag's squad managed just six shots compared to Newcastle's 22, with Joe Willock and Callum Wilson. getting the all important touches to claim victory. There was plenty to be pleased about as fans made their way home from the ground, and Given believes that the St James' Park faithful have created an atmosphere that allows their side to thrive, ensuring there is no such thing as an "easy afternoon" on Tyneside.

"[They can take] loads of confidence," he told Sky Sports when asked what Newcastle can take from the win. "Manchester United are a strong squad of players. Arsenal have got to come here if they’re going to win the league as well, it’s a tough place to come, no team comes here and has an easy afternoon.

"The way Eddie sets up his team, high energy, it gives everybody a roar. He makes positive substitutions, they’ve got fresh legs off the bench as well, and when you bring Callum Wilson off the bench and he pops up with a brilliant header, he’s a brilliant striker to help see the game off.

"You can see the special rapport they have with the fans - a couple years ago that wouldn’t have happened," Given added. "That was an aim of the ownership, this is a club on the way up, it’s nice to be here and see smiles on the fans’ faces again.

"There’s hope around the city and it’s great to see, and it’s hopefully here to stay. Hopefully they finish the season in the top four, it’ll be ahead of schedule if we’re all being honest but after today’s performance, after today’s result, there’s absolutely no reason why they can’t do it."
