Newcastle United thrash PSG in Champions League

Champions League football returned after a 20-year absence to St James' Park with a goal fest on Wednesday night as Newcastle United romped past Paris Saint-Germain 4-1 to take control of Group F.

Miguel Almiron opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a slick finish into the bottom left hand corner of Gigi Donnarumma's goal.

The Paraguayan's strike sent the partisans in the 52,000 crowd wild.

United boss Eddie Howe spoke in the prelude to the clash that his players would have to use the fervour of the fans positively and not become too emotional.

His charges appeared to be carrying out his wishes. PSG dominated possession but could not breach a stubborn rearguard.

The hosts doubled the advantage just before half-time. Following a goalmouth scramble, local boy Dan Burn headed Bruno Guimares' cross powerfully into the net.

Local heros

Another son of the local soil, Sean Longstaff, hit the third just after the restart and though Lucas Fernandez reduced the deficit after 56 minutes, United fended off the PSG incursions.

Fabian Schar compounded PSG's misery with a thunderous strike for the fourth in stoppage time.

Newcastle United's biggest win in the competition allowed hem to claim the three points and leapfrog PSG into pole position in the pool following the goalless draw between Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan.

“It’s some night," Longstaff told the broadcaster TNT. "For me and Burny to score tonight is pretty surreal.

"I’m lost for words really. It’s an unbelievable night. My family will be proud and probably a bit drunk!

"This is the elite of the elite. PSG have some of the best players in the world but we wanted to show how good we are."

Elsewhere in the competition, defending champions Manchester City scored two late goals through Julian Alvarez and Jérémy Doku to beat RB Leipzig 3-1 and maintain their 100 percent record.

Phil Foden gave City the lead after 25 minutes at the Red Bull Arena but Lois Openda, the summer recruit from the French outfit Lens, levelled just after the restart.

Despite the defeat Leipzig remain second in Group G with three points following the 2-2 draw between FK Crvena Zvezda and Young Boys.

In Group H, Barcelona made it two wins out of two with a 1-0 victory at Porto. Ferran Torres hit the winner in first-half stoppage time.
