Newcastle United 'target' Scott McTominay and more Manchester United transfer rumours

Newcastle United are eyeing up a move for Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay - according to reports - but accept that a deal between the two Premier League clubs remains unlikely.

McTominay, 26, progressed through the academy at Old Trafford and has made 189 appearances for the club across all competitions. However, the Scotland international has not been a regular starter this season.

Erik ten Hag signed Casemiro and Christian Eriksen this summer following his appointment as manager and the pair have been his go-to options in central midfield. McTominay also has Fred and Donny van de Beek for competition in the engine room as United continue to pursue Frenkie de Jong.

Reports from The Athletic suggest Newcastle continue to monitor McTominay and his situation in their own bid to strengthen in central midfield. However, the same article also states that he is not listed as a high priority due to the player being older and "more expensive" than the other "targets" available to them.

McTominay is under contract at Old Trafford until 2025. He has been capped 36 times by Scotland.

Elsewhere, reports from Spanish publication Revelo claim United have submitted their first loan offer for Joao Felix with the Atletico Madrid forward heavily linked with a temporary switch to the Premier League this month. Arsenal and Chelsea are also reported to be in the market for him.

Felix, 23, has fallen out of favour under Diego Simeone at the Wanda Metropolitano, while United continue to seek out a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo following his second departure from the club. However, they will not break the bank to do so during the January window.

According to the same article, meetings have been held between the relevant parties - including super agent Jorge Mendes - who represents Felix as well as Ronaldo and other top names. It has been mooted it would cost £18million for United to sign the Portugal international on loan for six months or £86million permanently.
