Newcastle United won two pre-season friendlies in two days this weekend. A double header at St James' Park saw the Magpies beat Atalanta 1-0 on Friday night, before beating Athletic Bilbao 2-1 on Saturday.

Anderson gives Howe a decision to make

Anderson impressed against Atalanta on Friday night, with ChronicleLive readers' rating the 19-year-old as the best performer over the two games. He won the penalty in the win over the Italian side.

The winger has been linked with a host of Championship and League One clubs this summer having ended last season in scintillating form on loan in League Two at Bristol Rovers. Burnley are the latest club to be linked with a move for Anderson, but it now looks increasingly likely that he could stay in the first-team picture this season at St James' Park.

Eddie Howe said post-match that a decision on the exciting youngster won't be made until the end of the transfer window, but the Newcastle head coach said "it looks like he'll stay, because of how he is performing."

Wood's low rating despite match winning moment

Wood converted the penalty that Anderson won in the Atalanta victory, but ChronicleLive readers' gave him a rating of 6.3 - the fourth lowest of all Newcastle players.

The striker, who signed for Newcastle from Burnley in January, also came in for criticism from Magpies supporters on social media. Wood looks as though he will play second fiddle to Callum Wilson this season.

The Magpies have been linked with a number of strikers this summer including Timo Werner, Armando Broja and Arnaud Kalimuendo.

Goalkeepers receive same rating

Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka both received ratings of 7.4 from the ChronicleLive readers. Dubravka played against Bilbao, and despite conceding, made key saves in both halves.

Pope kept a clean sheet, and like Dubravka, made a number of important saves. Howe has two very capable goalkeepers to pick from and it looks set to be a tight call between who starts against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Burn to be Botman's partner?

Who will partner Botman in defence is the question on many Newcastle fans' lips. Botman played alongside Lascelles in the win over Bilbao, but ChronicleLive readers only gave the 28-year-old a rating of 6.0.

Burn was rated as the Magpies' best defender over the weekend, with a score of 8.1. He partnered Schar in the 1-0 victory over Atalanta. The towering defender could partner Botman in defence against Forest, but the fact both centre-backs are left-sided could be an issue.

Having signed from Lille for a fee of around £32 million, Botman is a guaranteed starter for the beginning of the new campaign, but it's still uncertain who will partner him, although Burn did his chances no harm with his performance on Friday night.
