Newcastle United supporters deliver Champions League verdict after Southampton win

Newcastle United supporters are over the moon after their side took a step closer to securing Champions League football at St. James' Park next season. The Magpies had to come from behind to beat struggling Southampton, but beat Ruben Selles side 3-1 to take another big step towards European football.

It was the Premier League strugglers who opened the scoring through Stuart Armstrong, giving Southampton a deserved lead at the break. Callum Wilson replaced Anthony Gordon at half-time, with the January arrival squandering two golden chances inside the first-half.

The Newcastle number nine equalised just nine minutes after coming on, converting Alexander Isak's low cross from close range. Wilson had a goal chalked off by VAR for offside before a Theo Walcott own goal handed the Magpies the lead.

The Toon striker eventually got his second in the 81st minute after Southampton failed to clear a long punt upfield from Nick Pope, Wilson pounced and went round Alex McCarthy for a tap in.

Here's what Newcastle United supporters had to say after the win over Southampton:

@agbnufc_ said: "Brilliant, we are (ALMOST) there! We always finish games looking stronger and fitter as the opposition starts to melt away, Everton and Southampton both picked apart in similar ways. That's coaching and training paying off."

@tynetakes said: "What a response. It took that goal to kick us into gear. Fair play to the crowd they were electric Great change by Howe. Wilson looks back to his best. Changed the game. Isak definitely can play that role on the left. So close now, didn’t panic and were excellent 2nd half. Get in!"

@milessteven001 tweeted: "Our intense second-half performance made the difference. Howe should get the plaudits for the clever tweaks he made at the break, as he’s done a few times already this season. Our character is amazing and we’ve got leaders everywhere, but Eddie’s coaching masterclass won the day."

@jennufcboss tweeted: "Great result after a tricky start. Gutted for Wilson though that he didn't get his hat-trick!"

@mark1984toon tweeted: "Absolutely brilliant second half, felt Gordon was unlucky. When he gets his first it will open up for him just like Almiron there is a good player in there."

@Roryhanna45 said: "Isak and Wilson is a must from now on. Gordon a great option to bring on but just lacking end product will get that with a pre-season under Howe."

@AndyNUFCMiller1 said: "Wow what a difference in that second half totally different team. Well done lads."

@Davidkwilliam17 said: "Another big three points in the bag, we are on fire."
