Newcastle United striker talked up by Eddie Howe as England man faces late fitness test

Eddie Howe says that Chris Wood is adapting brilliantly to Newcastle United's front-foot football this season.

When Wood arrived as a £25million from Burnley last season, United were deep in trouble in the Premier League and the Magpies had to carve out results. This term has seen Howe's team play with much more of an attacking freedom that has got fans excited and reminiscing of better days during the Kevin Keegan era.

United's 33-point haul after 15 games is the best since the 1995/96 season and Wood has played his part in the campaign with three goals in all competitions.

Howe said: "I think Chris is adapting well to our style of play. Last year, the team played a certain way and this year we’ve played a slightly different way where we are evolving and tweaking it every week and I think Chris really come with that.

"I’d say the last few games have probably been his best performances for us since he’s been here. I’m really pleased with Chris, he’s a very dependable character and player."

Wood is in the box seat to start against Leeds although Callum Wilson is back from an illness. On Wilson, Howe said: "We’ll see how he gets through today."
