Newcastle United step up their hunt for 6ft 7in centre-back while Bruno Guimarães waits for important call

Newcastle United will have to try again in their bid sign Brighton & Hove Albion's Dan Burn.

Sources at the Amex Stadium have indicated that their initial enquiry of around £8million was dismissed by the Seagulls.

The 6ft 7in defender is a boyhood fan of the Magpies and grew up idolising Alan Shearer.

Newcastle know they are up against the clock and the problem is now compounded by clubs suggesting selling star players now would then leave them with a mad scramble to get a replacement.

When asked about whether Burn's head could be turned by interest from the black-and-whites he watched as a kid, Graham Potter said: "As I always say, Dan does it with a top attitude and 100% professionalism."

With Sevilla director of football Monchi seemingly trying to dismiss talk of Diego Carlos leaving in this window - despite the persistence of his agent suggesting a move could still be possible - there has been renewed talk of Bayer Leverkusen full-back Mitchel Bakker from Germany today.

Eddie Howe knows he is spinning plates going into the final three days of the window and even though Newcastle don't have a competitive game weekend the recruitment chase is likely to provide ample viewing for those following the last throes of the January window.

For now attention swings back to Lyon's Bruno Guimarães.

The midfielder hopes that Lyon accept Newcastle's offer and that his medical will go ahead on Friday.
