Callum Wilson should be in Gareth Southgate's World Cup squad - if expected goals per game are anything to go by.
Indeed, Wilson - who has scored three times in five matches so far this term - is bettered only by Erling Haaland on that score. Haaland, who has grabbed 21 goals for club and country this season, has an xG per 90 rate of 0.92.
He is then followed by Wilson at 0.74 with the Newcastle United striker ahead of any English striker going into the Qatar tournament. As far as other top-flight stars are concerned Gabriel Jesus has a xG rate of 0.59 while Roberto Firmino is on 0.57 and most notably Kane has 0.47.
Kane is heading to the World Cup as the main striker and has eight goals to his name having played nine times. Wilson is battling with former Toon striker Ivan Toney, Raheem Sterling of Chelsea, Tammy Abraham of Roma and Jarrod Bowen of West Ham.
Speaking about going to the World Cup, Wilson said this month: "I wasn't available for selection for the last squads against Italy and Germany. I think if I was fit my performances would have had to stay at the level they were to get me in.
"There's nine games and there's an opportunity to play well in those games and focus on the performances and the process. I don't see why not. Behind Harry Kane I don't see why I can't follow and be the second striker."
