Newcastle United sign Loris Karius as former Liverpool star solves goalkeeper crisis

Newcastle United have signed former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius on a short-term deal. The German stopper, 29, has been without a club since the summer but has been picked up by the Magpies after an injury to Karl Darlow.

The goalkeeper will be added to the Howe's 25-man Premier League squad until January, with the Magpies having an option to extend the deal to the summer.

Darlow has been Newcastle's backup stopper so far this term, with Nick Pope taking the No 1 jersey upon his arrival from Burnley. However, Chronicle Live understands the 31-year-old is facing a spell on the sidelines after an ankle injury in training this week.

Karius was released by Liverpool earlier this year after a dramatic fall from grace on Merseyside. The former Reds goalkeeper started the 2018 Champions League but made two infamous howlers in the clash to hand Real Madrid the competition.

Since that night in Ukraine, Karius struggled to regain his spot under Jurgen Klopp and was shipped out on loan to Besiktas and Union Berlin before his contract expired at Liverpool.

Speaking earlier this summer, Karius admitted he was on the hunt for a new team: "I took a week's holiday after the season. That was enough for me. Now the focus is on the restart. There's a new challenge coming up," he said.

"I'm ready for it and I'm getting fit now. That's my focus right now. I'm in top shape. I've been training at the highest level all year, with one of the best teams in the world. I've done a lot for myself physically. I've worked a lot on my personality and strengthened myself mentally, that's why I'm I'm excited about what's to come.

"I'm free and I can make my own decisions. This is a new situation that I'm looking forward to. A new challenge is coming up, but that's always a good thing. I'm ready, mentally and physically."
