Newcastle United should ‘throw everything’ at signing former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane

Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson believes Newcastle United should throw everything at signing Bayern Munich forward Sadio Mane this summer. The 31-year-old is reportedly top of Thomas Tuchel's transfer list at the Bundesliga side as he looks to reshape his squad for next season.

The Senegalese forward only signed for Bayern last summer for a reported fee of £35million, but recent reports in the Mail claim he could leave the club if an offer is tabled in the region of £25million. Mane scored seven goals in 25 league appearances during his first season back in Germany, but was involved in a bust up with team-mate Leroy Sane.

Mane is alleged to have punched Sane in the face after Die Roten were dumped out of the Champions League against Manchester City in April. The incident highlighted a clear divide in the camp at Bayern and came just a week after Tuchel's arrival.

The former Liverpool forward, along with Sane, Bouna Sarr, Alexander Nubel, Marcel Sabitzer, Benjamin Pavard and Serge Gnabry are all reportedly free to leave this summer. Mane has been linked with a return to Anfield given their disappointing campaign, but former defender Johnson believes St. James' Park would be a better destination.

"Klopp should not look at Mane again," Johnson told Neue Online Casinos. "He is a fantastic player, but he would be coming back to a completely different team to the one that he left.

"He was great for Liverpool at the time, but it does not mean that he would be great for them now. I don’t think they should go for him.

"For Newcastle though, it would be huge. Being in the Champions League will help them attract even better players, and Mane would be an amazing signing.

"They need to make the most of it this year as if they do not finish in the top 4 next year, they will still have Champions League quality players with them. That will therefore help them bounce back."
