Newcastle United set for intriguing January finale with Eddie Howe wanting new star to 'excite' fans

Eddie Howe has revealed he wants to sign a player that will "excite" the Newcastle public after the shock sale of Chris Wood.

The £25million striker, who signed from Burnley last winter, will make his move to Nottingham Forest today after asking to leave St James' Park to pursue an excellent opportunity as he enters the autumn of his career. Wood leaves Newcastle with the best wishes of all the staff on Tyneside.

But now the time has come to turn a new page in the striker department for Howe and his staff. He admitted that the club were looking at a "pool of players" and face a race against time to get a deal done.

Although, Howe's intentions were clear when asked about bringing in a new star in the remainder of the window.

Howe told Chronicle Live: "Hopefully if we are able to do a deal and bring a player in. For me, if you are going to bring a player in the forward area, you want a player that can excite people.

"They're the players that can make a difference, can create or score. They are the hardest ones to find and hardest ones to recruit. That is our task now with the remaining time we have left."

Howe also stated he did not anticipate losing Wood after just 12 months.

Howe said: "Yeah I think if you go back three or four days, this was certainly not something on my horizon. Losing a player that we have used so much is not something we'd have wanted to do.

"You have to understand, and I said earlier in the window, January can be a very difficult month. Things happen that you don't expect but then you need to react. That is the key thing now."
