Newcastle United sent James Tarkowski transfer warning amid Diego Carlos uncertainty

Newcastle United have been warned there is 'no chance' of Burnley approving a January sale for James Tarkowski.

That is the view of pundit and former Clarets goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who insists Sean Dyche's bid for survival depends on the centre-back.

Newcastle are yet to bring in a new defender so far in this window despite attempts to recruit Sven Botman and Diego Carlos.

The Sevilla centre-back appeared to be on course for a St James' Park switch, only for comments on Wednesday night to cast doubt over a deal.

Burnley have already sanctioned the sale of Chris Wood to their relegation rivals, and Tarkowski has been repeatedly linked in recent months.

The England international's contract at Turf Moor is due to expire in the summer, but Robinson does not believe his former side will be tempted to cash in.

He told Football Insider: “There is no way Burnley will take an offer for Tarkowski.

“They have sold Chris Wood to Newcastle because there was a release clause in his contract that was activated. Tarkowski does not have the same and they don’t have cover in that area.

“Tarkowski and Ben Mee, by their own admissions, have not played as well as they could have this season.

“There is no way Burnley will sell Tarkowski in January, especially not to Newcastle. If Burnley have any chance of staying in the league they need Tarkowski.

“I cannot see any scenario in which they’d accept the money.”
