Newcastle United sent Diego Costa transfer message

Diego Costa would provide an 'edge' that could help lift Newcastle United out of the relegation zone.

That is the view of pundit and former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who has urged the Magpies to sign the former Chelsea striker.

Costa is now a free agent after leaving Brazilian outfit Atletico Mineiro, scoring five goals in 19 appearances to help his side lift the country's Serie A title last season.

The 33-year-old enjoyed a successful if controversial three-year spell at Chelsea, lifting two Premier League titles and a League Cup before returning to Atletico Madrid in 2017.

The former Spain international is said to have held informal talks over a return to England with Arsenal, although recent reports indicate he is targeting a deal with Corinthians.

However, Robinson believes the striker would prove an ideal fit at St James' Park and insists Eddie Howe would welcome a 'proven goalscorer at the highest level'.

He told Football Insider: "If I was Newcastle I’d take him tomorrow

“He is a proven goalscorer at the highest level. He has got an edge to him as well. He’s a fighter. That edge could get Newcastle out of trouble.

“Draws are no good for them at the moment. They need to win football matches and Costa is a match-winner. You try to take positives out of the game against Watford but there’s few.

“If you put a character like Diego Costa in that dressing room… Wow. All of a sudden the feeling in that dressing room could change. He’d give them hope.

“I’d take him straight away. The fans would love him up there. He’d be absolutely brilliant.”
