Newcastle United say emotional goodbye to one of the most recognisable staff members at St James' Park

Physio Derek Wright has treated the biggest names of all at Newcastle United - and won the respect of legendary names like Alan Shearer, Nobby Solano, David Ginola and Rob Lee along the way.

Football physios don't usually get legendary status in the game but Wright - who has served a total of 32 managers or caretaker bosses - leaves his post at St James' Park and will be recognised by fans more than some former players. A club statement read: "Newcastle United's long-serving head physiotherapist, Derek Wright, is retiring after an incredible 38 years of service to the club.

"Derek joined the Magpies' backroom team in 1984 and has served under 32 permanent or interim managers, as well as treating hundreds of different players. "A familiar face in the treatment room, dressing room and on the United bench over the years, Derek is a much-loved and respected part of the Newcastle United family and will be hugely missed at the first team and by everyone who knows him."

Meanwhile, Wright, who served Kevin Keegan and Sir Bobby Robson during the club's climb to the upper echelons of European football, said: "It hasn't been an easy decision to leave the club that I love, and which has been my life for nearly 40 years.

"It has been an honour and a privilege to work for Newcastle United Football Club and I would like to thank all of the managers, coaches, players, staff and fans who have made it such a memorable time.

"I am very happy to maintain my connection with the club, but I am looking forward to the future spending and enjoying time with my family. I will continue supporting my club as always watching the team go from strength to strength."

Fan Stuart Latimer spoke of the days when Wright would outpace opposing staff to get to players after a collision. He said:"It was great watching him in sprinting races at SJP with other physios."

United added: "The club would like to thank Derek for his long and exemplary service and will be organising a suitable send-off for him with players and staff to celebrate his achievements. "Everyone at Newcastle United wishes Derek a long and happy retirement."

And one United insider told Chronicle Live: "Derek has been here and seen it all, he has seen the good times and bad and always stuck with the club. "He was never one to go close to the limelight he just simply did his job. "If ever a sensible quiet word was needed he'd provide it, as well as exceptional human care and emotional intelligence, not just in the treatment room, around the entire club."

Wright worked at United during stints at the old Benwell site, Durham’s Riverside and the club’s current Benton base.
