Newcastle United's Sven Botman coup highlighted by AC Milan transfer expectations

Newcastle United supporters are over the moon to have captured one of Europe's best up and coming defenders in Sven Botman. The Dutch youth international arrives on Tyneside after the Magpies fended off interest from Serie A title holders AC Milan.

The Serie A outfit were unable to compete with Newcastle's financial muscle despite being big fans of the 22-year-old. The Italian outfit had been hoping goalkeeper Mike Maignan, Botman's former team-mate during the Ligue 1 title winning season at Lille, would help get the deal over the line.

Nonetheless, it was the project and long-term ambition at Newcastle that lured Botman to Tyneside. The fact the Magpies have been able to see of AC Milan to a signing is an impressive feat alone, but a conversation between Maignan and boss Stefano Pioli gives a real insight into the calibre of player the Toon have acquired.

According to ACMilaninfo.com, Italian Journalist Daniele Longo recalled an interesting conversation behind the scenes that took place at Milan's training ground, Milanello, prior to Botman signing for Newcastle. “I know that Maignan has talked with Botman about a move to AC Milan. The French goalkeeper made a joke with coach Pioli saying to him: ‘Coach, next year with Botman and Tomori we will win the Scudetto’. They are very good friends."

Of course, nobody is expecting the Magpies to challenge for the league title next season, given the gulf in class between Manchester City and Liverpool. However, the comments suggest Botman would walk into a Milan side that won the title last year, further encouragement if any were needed.

Eddie Howe has already expressed his delight at acquiring the Dutchman's services and believes all three summer additions have improved Newcastle's squad ahead of next season.
