Newcastle United's stay in Dubai could be start of road that leads to Champions League prize pot

Eddie Howe will be looking for a similar type of response from his Newcastle United players by the time they check out of their luxury hotel in Dubai.

Last season their stay at the Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex resulted in a strong finish in the Premier League from Howe's squad as they served up six wins from nine games to end the campaign in a respectable 11th place. Another half-dozen wins this time around will pretty much assure them a place in Europe.

The first part of Newcastle's visit to the Middle East has been about rest and recovery after an intense late winter period that included some crunch top-flight matches and the run-up to the Carabao Cup final. The Newcastle boss spoke about the "excursions" of the cup run and the ups and downs of getting to the final showpiece before the emotional fallout of losing at Wembley.

Therefore, the chance to unwind at the health clubs and spas of the plush complex will be key before Howe hits the reset button ahead of the build-up to the encounter with Manchester United at St James' Park. By April 2, the business end of the season will have commenced and the decisive weeks to follow will determine whether United are going to be in the Champions League or not.

Even six wins from the remaining 12 fixtures would not guarantee a place at Europe's top table. Although that might be enough to secure either a Europa League spot or a place in the Europa Conference League.

Newcastle could need eights wins from their last 12 matches to finish in the top four but it is not beyond the realms of possibility given success in games against Man United and Spurs could prove key. Howe is focused only on the Red Devils for now.

Speaking about Newcastle's week in Dubai, Howe said: "Immediately it'll be a little bit of rest after an intense period of game, then we'll get back to training and preparation for Manchester United."

The complex has been used by Arsenal and Man United themselves in years gone by with the Red Devils using the rehab areas to get Marcus Rashford back up to speed. With Newcastle going into the international break aiming to get Anthony Gordon back up and running after an ankle injury they could hardly be in a better spot.

It also has hi-tech facilities including an altitude chamber, cryo chamber, climate chamber and a performance lab which will no doubt see Howe and his technical team make the most of their surroundings off the training pitch. With international stars like Sven Botman, Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes on duty with their countries, it is hardly ideal squad wise but Howe knows the benefits of the get together.

The likes of Nick Pope, Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson are also overcoming illness and injuries but there is optimism within the Toon camp they will be available for the Man United clash. United's immediate return to UK shores last time around resulted in a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur.

But once Newcastle regrouped they earned wins against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Leicester City, Crystal Palace and Norwich City. Having been written off as relegation fodder before Christmas, they had pretty much secured their top-flight status by Easter Sunday with a handful of games to spare.

This season will be about focusing on a big finish as they look to pick up their best position in the Premier League since 2012. Fifth spot would equal Alan Pardew's achievements of 11 years ago.

It remains to be seen what will be enough for a Champions League finish, it could be as low as 64 or 65 points, it could be as high as 76. Either way, Howe has called for nothing but focus on a game-by-game basis and if Newcastle hit the levels set in training, they will get what they deserve.

Ask some fans and they will tell you regardless of the Magpies' final position, getting into Europe would be classed as a huge success. Toon fan Adam O'Connell said: "Europe and a cup final and it's been such a great season." And supporter Gavin Lockey says: "It's not all about the Champions League, not this year. "Top six would be fantastic, top eight a really good year."

Whatever happens on Tyneside there seems to be plenty of appreciation for the team so far. It feels like a positive step forward has been made regardless of what promises to be an intriguing finale.
