Newcastle United's Premier League threat underlined as verdict given on title and top four chance

Newcastle United will start the new Premier League season as one of the players sitting at the top table having barged their way alongside the top flight's leading names last season. A fourth-place finish brought with it Champions League football, but also a rise in expectation across the country at what this side can do.

More importantly, back home in Newcastle it brought renewed hope and excitement about watching the team. Still, expectation has risen at St James' Park too given the team that is being built and what the current crop did last season.

That expectation is being recognised in the latest odds released for next season. Following the publication of the Premier League fixtures this morning which have seen the Magpies handed the toughest start of any team with Aston Villa, Manchester City and Liverpool first up, bookmakers have given their early decision on the runners and riders with the Mags well fancied.

Manchester City are of course the favourites to win the league ad finish in the top four, you'd expect nothing less of the treble winners, but Newcastle's odds are as low at this time of year as they have been for probably 20 years.

Bet365 have Newcastle as 14/1 to win the Premier League, but the key market is the race for the top four, with most Newcastle fans no doubt happy to see the side secure Champions League football once again for the second successive year. Eddie Howe's team are 6/5 to finish top four next season, much more fancied than the likes of Aston Villa at 10/1.

Meanwhile Alexander Isak is Newcastle's best priced bet to finish top scorer, with his chances rated at 33/1.
