Newcastle United signed off from their ill-fated Papa Johns Trophy campaign with a 2-0 loss at Lincoln City.
Newcastle were already eliminated from the competition after picking up just one point from their games against Doncaster Rovers and Barnsley in Group E.
Lincoln were playing for a place in the knockout stages. And Newcastle got off to a bad start when a defensive error from Alex Murphy let in Danny Madroiu in before he slotted home on eight minutes for the Imps.
City were then forced into making an early substitution when Jacob Davenport replaced Tashan Oakley-Boothe. A booking for Mark Kennedy came on the stroke of half-time after the City player kicked the ball away.
But the deficit was just one at the break for Newcastle with Elliott Dickman reshuffling his team for the final game. United searched in vain for an equaliser after the break as they looked to salvage some pride from the competition.
Jude Smith made a second half save to deny Freddie Draper with 10 minutes to go. With three minutes left the 18-year-old Draper put the lid on it for Lincoln. Draper was sent through by Jamie Robson before finishing beneath Smith.
It ends the tournament on a low for Newcastle as they finish bottom of their group.
