Newcastle United's Elliot Anderson impresses for Scotland U21s in battling draw with leaders Belgium

Newcastle United's Elliot Anderson almost gave Scotland Under-21s a huge vicory over Belgium, going closest for the Scots in a goalless draw. The Scotttish U21s secured a well-deserved point in their Euro 2023 qualifier against group winners Belgium in Sint-Truiden.

Scot Gemmill's side, who had a first-half effort controversially ruled out for offside, sit fourth in their group and cannot qualify with one game to play. Belgium have qualified for next summer's finals in top spot after extending their unbeaten run in the group to eight matches.

The Scots produced a performance full of energy to match their hosts and were unlucky not to lead at half-time. Stephen Welsh turned home Lewis Mayo's knockdown from a corner, but referee Georgi Davidov deemed the latter to have committed a foul when he won his header.

Anderson, who is set to feature for the Magpies in their pre-season schedule, went close to a late winner when he fired wide from the impressive Connor Barron's cross as Belgium were restricted to half-chances. Scotland conclude their qualifying campaign against second-placed Denmark in Vejle on Friday.
