Newcastle United's dismal record at Wembley and other pre-match statistics ahead of the Carabao Cup final

Newcastle United will be looking to defy the history books when they face Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

The Magpies have lost in each of their last eight matches at Wembley, which is the longest ever losing run by a team at Wembley in history. Their last win at the national stadium came over 67 years ago as Newcastle defeated Manchester City 3-1 in the 1955 FA Cup final.

However, Newcastle have defied the odds during the current League Cup campaign by reaching the final of this competition for the first time in 47 years courtesy of wins against Tranmere, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Leicester, and Southampton respectively.

Man United will be looking to end a trophy-drought of their own. The Red Devils have not lifted a major piece of silverware since winning the League Cup and UEFA Europa League under Jose Mourinho in 2017, and lost 1-0 against Chelsea in the 2018 FA Cup final on their previous visit to Wembley.

Here are a number of other interest statistics ahead of the game...

  • The Magpies have lost their last four major finals (1974, 1998, 1999 FA Cup finals, and 1976 League Cup final) since they defeated Hungarian outfit Ujpest in the 1969 Fairs Cup final.
  • Since 2009-10, no manager has more wins in the League Cup than Eddie Howe (22, level with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola).
  • Howe is also looking to become the first English manager to win the League Cup since Steve McClaren helped Middlesbrough lift the trophy in 2004.
  • Callum Wilson scored at Wembley for England in a 3-0 win over USA in November 2018. He could become only the third player to score for both Newcastle and England at the stadium, after Jackie Milburn and Robert Lee.
