Newcastle United defender Dan Burn believes Jurgen Klopp's recent "no ceiling" jibe at the Magpies does a disservice to the performances of his team-mates. Burn and co find themselves in fourth place so far this season, and are enjoying an incredible run of form under Eddie Howe.
Recently, Klopp made a sarcastic comment in reaction Newcastle director of football Dan Ashworth saying the club have "no ceiling" due to their new owners wealth, comparing the Magpies ability to spend limitless amounts of money to that of the Reds.
While true Newcastle have spent well since last October's takeover, the reality is Howe and his backroom staff have worked wonders with plenty of players who were already at the Magpies disposal.
The likes of Fabian Schar, Jonjo Shelvey, Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock, Miguel Almiron, Joelinton, Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson have all improved tremendously under Howe, in comparison to their performances under former Newcastle boss Steve Bruce. And the Geordie born defender has revealed that while he understands why Klopp made the comment he did, he still believes it takes away the credit his team mates deserve for their incredible performances of late.
"The direction the club is going, and the pace it is accelerating at, is great. I can’t really see it slowing down," Burn told the i. "We’ve been criticised a little bit for saying there’s no ceiling, thinking we’re just going to spend money but with the financial fair play restrictions and stuff it’s not possible. It’s not all about that, it’s about how the club has been run. I knew Dan Ashworth at Brighton and he did great work there, the way he set the club up, if he can do similar here we can really kick on and get to the top.
"We tend not to listen to a lot of what has been said, we try to keep it in house. But when things like that [Jurgen Klopp's no ceiling comment] are said it is frustrating because a lot of the lads who are performing really well were here before the takeover and I think it’s a little bit lazy when they do say that.
"I can understand where they’re coming from. At the moment people say we’re the richest club in the world and we probably will go on to spend a lot more money but if you look at the money we’ve spent so far and the lads that play week in, week out it’s probably not doing us justice."
