Newcastle United's Carabao Cup final vs Manchester United watched by record audience

Newcastle United's 2-0 defeat against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday was watched by a record audience of 4.26 million on Sky Sports.

The peak audience was 60,000 higher than the previous competition record, which was set during the 2022 final when Liverpool defeated Chelsea on penalties at Wembley.

The average audience for the game was over half a million viewers higher than the previous year, with 3.79m tuning in across the 90 minutes.

Across the whole League Cup campaign, the cumulative television audience rose to over 18 million, which was an increase of one million on the previous season, with the average audience up from 1.13m to 1.2m.

The Magpies defeated Tranmere Rovers, Crystal Palace, AFC Bournemouth, Leicester City, and Southampton (over two legs) to book their place at Wembley to face Man United.

Casemiro's header just past the half-hour mark opened the scoring for Man United, before Marcus Rashford's low shot was diverted into his own net by Newcastle defender Sven Botman.
