Newcastle United's Allan Saint-Maximin tipped to snub Tottenham transfer advance

Paul Robinson has claimed that Allan Saint-Maximin would be a perfect addition to the Tottenham Hotspur squad this summer as they prepare to replace Steven Bergwijn. However, he believes the Frenchman won't fancy a Spurs switch.

Bergwijn is said to be unhappy with his lack of game time in North London and will likely move on over the next few months. That may leave Antonio Conte searching for a direct replacement and Robinson believes Saint-Maximin would be an ideal target.

However, with the Frenchman seemingly happy on Tyneside, it isn’t a signing he expects Spurs to be able to pull off, especially without being able to guarantee a starting berth.

“Saint-Maximin is the type of player Spurs should sign if they lose Bergwijn,” he told Football Insider. “He’d be perfect. They have got [Lucas] Moura, [Dejan] Kulusevski and Son [Heung-min] to play out wide but I’d still expect another to come in.

“Somebody like Saint-Maximin would be great. I cannot see Saint-Maximin leaving Newcastle though, in all honesty. That club is going in the right direction. They are going to bring in players and they can offer players what they want in terms of contracts.

“I find it difficult to believe that he would swap a starting role at Newcastle for a bit-part role at Spurs. Saint-Maximin would not start at Spurs. I’m not sure that role would be appealing to him as much as I’d like to see it.”

There were rumours that Newcastle would be willing to listen to substantial offers for the French winger a few weeks ago. Despite United’s brilliant second half of the season, Saint-Maximin was unable to have the same devastating impact he had for much of the first half of the campaign.

Although, because of the quality that everyone on Tyneside knows he possesses, he will remain a key part of what Eddie Howe and the new owners will hope to achieve in the next few years.
