Newcastle United pre-season plans revealed with potential games against Chelsea and Leeds

Newcastle United will reportedly head to the United States for their pre-season tour this summer. The Athletic claim Chelsea, Brighton and Leeds United - depending on their Premier League status - could also join the Magpies for a mini tournament.

Last year, Newcastle stayed in Europe, with two fixtures in Austria before heading to Portugal for a clash against Benfica. The Middle East has proven a fruitful preparation ground for United since the Saudi-backed takeover but scorching July temperatures make a pre-season camp impractical.

Newcastle last travelled to the US in 2015, when Steve McClaren took an eventually-relegated side to Sacramento and Portland. Comically, the Magpies also trained in the States four years earlier, a trip that involved 10 flights in as many days.

Joey Barton and Nile Ranger were also denied access to the country for previous misdemeanours. Yohan Cabaye, too, did not make the plane due to visa issues, having recently arrived from Ligue 1 outfit Lille.

Eddie Howe will be hoping for a smoother trip across the pond should a pre-season tour to the US become official. The Toon boss has used previous trips as an opportunity to improve team morale - a masterstroke last January as Newcastle coasted towards Premier League survival.
