Newcastle United players past and present pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II

Past and present Newcastle United players have honoured Her Majesty the Queen following her death. Britain’s longest-reigning monarch passed away on Thursday afternoon and the country is in national mourning until the funeral.

Newcastle were quick to post a solemn statement after an announcement came from the Royal Family. A tweet read: Newcastle United and its owners are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

“We join the world in sending our deepest condolences to the Royal Family. All flags at St. James' Park will fly at half mast as we join the country in observing a period of national mourning.”

Those who have represented the Magpies - both past and present - also paid tribute to the Queen. Alan Shearer, who received a CBE from Prince William in 2016, remembered the time he met Her Majesty while she was on royal duties in Alnwick a decade ago.

“The Queen dedicated her life to the service of this country,” Shearer posted. “For a boy from Newcastle, it was an honour to be in her presence. Thank you, Ma’am. For everything.”

Rob Lee posted a simple, but sobering, “RIP our Queen” on Twitter after the news broke.

Former Toon skipper turned church pastor Gavin Peacock noted the “end of an era” of British life as we know it. He wrote: “The Queen is dead. The end of an era. What a servant and a great Christian woman. May she rest in glory now.”

Warren Barton highlighted the “sad day” following the news that shocked the nation. From the current crop, Bruno Guimaraes paid his respects to Her Majesty ahead of - as it stands - the Premier League clash against West Ham United.
