Newcastle United have stepped up their bid to add another goalkeeper to their ranks ahead of the new season. With Freddie Woodman set to join Preston North End next week, Newcastle are looking to bring in another senior goalkeeper to boost their ranks.
Burnley's England keeper Nick Pope has been linked with United today via Sky Sports, however, Chronicle Live understands that the 30-year-old is also wanted by West Ham, Nottingham Forest and Southampton.
Although, Burnley's asking price would have to come down for Pope with the 6ft 3in keeper valued highly by the Clarets. Indeed, a price of £40million has been reported already this summer.
The price would have to drop by almost half for some of the clubs interested in the former York City loanee. But he is ready for his next challenge after six years at Burnley.
Pope's representatives are pushing to get him a move in time for the start of pre-season after the shot-stopper signed off from England duty this week. Pope faced Newcastle on the final game of the season and lost 2-1 as Burnley were relegated.
Yet he is highly regarded by England and is expected to get a Premier League move. Pope has a year left on his deal with the Clarets.
If United did win the race to sign Pope it would almost certainly leave a question mark over Karl Darlow. Darlow last featured for Newcastle last November in the 3-3 draw with Brentford.
