Newcastle found themselves 1-0 down at the break after Ivan Toney converted from the spot in first-half stoppage time. Eddie Howe responded by introducing Wilson and Gordon at the start of the second half, which kickstarted their impressive revival.

David Raya was credited with an own goal after Joelinton's effort from a tight angle took a decisive deflection off the Brentford goalkeeper. Wilson then teed up Alexander Isak to bag his fifth goal in as many games and inspire Newcastle to a fifth straight victory in the Premier League.

“What we’ve seen from Newcastle today, they’re not shy,” Beckford said on the BBC’s Final Score.

Wilson also had a goal ruled out for handball after a VAR review, but Newcastle marched to victory to reclaim third spot in the table.

Manchester United had briefly leapfrogged Newcastle after defeating Everton 2-0 in the early kick-off, but the Magpies returned to third place courtesy of their superior goal difference.
