Newcastle United owner responds to West Ham Europa Conference League win with brilliant message

Newcastle United co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi has congratulated West Ham United on their Europa Conference League final win on Wednesday.

Jarrod Bowen scored a 90th minute winner after Said Benrahma saw his penalty two minutes after the hour mark cancelled out by Giacomo Bonaventura. The Hammers secured their first piece of European silverware since winning the Intertoto Cup in 1999 and with it they have qualified for the Europa League next season.

Ghodoussi, a partner at PCP Capital Partners alongside his wife Amanda Staveley, is a co-owner of Newcastle with the Reuben brothers and the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund. Replying to a video of Hammers boss David Moyes dancing in his side's changing room at the Fortuna Arena after the game, Ghodoussi wrote on social media platform Twitter that it was 'well deserved' with clapping and celebration emojis.

Moyes enjoyed his celebrations after the game and invited his 87-year-old father pitchside to join him. It will have been cathartic for a manager under pressure having seen his side disappoint in the Premier League this season.

"He was the first one, I thought I should get it round his neck," Moyes said of handing the medal to his father. "He's watched a lot over the years and I hope he enjoyed it."

West Ham will compete in European competition for the third season in a row in 2023/24. "I actually think the last two years have been an incredible journey," Moyes added.

"It's an incredible achievement to do so well in Europe, you look at some of the very good teams who find it a struggle. It's great credit, we've turned a disappointing season into a super season." Newcastle, meanwhile, are returning to the Champions League as one of eight Premier League clubs taking part in European competition next season
