The Newcastle United that kick-off the 2022/23 campaign is a completely different animal to the one that opened 2021/22, with Eddie Howe ’s side now holding genuine ambitions of a top-six challenge.
A relatively kind opening two games will give the new recruits a chance to bed in before Manchester City provide the first real test of the Magpies’ lofty ambitions on August 21. The clash with the champions is one of three Newcastle games earmarked for live coverage in August.

Sunday, August 21: Newcastle vs Manchester City (4.30pm kick-off)
The Magpies’ opening-day clash at home to Nottingham Forest and their trip to Brighton the following Saturday (both 3pm kick-offs) have both failed to capture the imagination of the broadcasters.
Therefore, the first chance to catch Howe’s side on live TV is the home fixture with Manchester City on August 21.
Pep Guardiola’s side cruised to a 4-0 victory on their last visit to St James’ Park, a loss that preceded a run of nine undefeated for the hosts. You can watch it on Sky Sports Main Event, Sky Sports Premier League and Sky Sports Ultra.
Sunday, August 28: Wolves vs Newcastle (2pm kick-off)
Newcastle are back on live TV again the following Sunday, with their trip to Molineux also being broadcast on Sky Sports Main Event, Sky Sports Premier League and Sky Sports Ultra.
Wolves started last season with four defeats in five and ended it with two points from a possible 21. They should provide a welcome filling to a daunting end to the month.
Wednesday, August 31: Liverpool vs Newcastle (8pm kick-off)
For United's third and final live action of the month comes from Anfield.
The Magpies produced a stubborn effort in defeat to Jurgen Klopp’s side in April but haven’t won a league match at the Merseyside club since 1994. The game forms part of a full schedule of midweek Premier League fixtures and can be followed live on BT Sport 1 and BT Ultimate.
