Newcastle United news with Victor Osimhen links and Schar's praise for Howe

Here are your Newcastle United headlines for Thursday, June 1, 2023.

Victor Osimhen links

Newcastle have been reported as one of the clubs leading the chase for Napoli star Victor Osimhen. The Magpies will again be looking to strengthen their squad in the summer transfer window, although Eddie Howe insists there won't be big changes.

Osimhen has caught the eye of many of Europe's leading clubs this season as Napoli clinched the Serie A title, with Manchester United thought to be keen on his services.

Gazzetta dello Sport are reporting the Magpies have made contact with the agent of the 24-year-old Nigerian striker - although an eye-watering £130m pricetag would almost double Newcastle's previous record.

Schar's Howe praise

Fabian Schar has opened up on the 'most beautiful' season of his career after helping Newcastle United to qualify for the Champions League. The Switzerland international lavished Eddie Howe with praise while also hailing the club's investment and transfer strategy since the takeover in October 2021.

He told Swiss outlet BlueWin via Sport Witness: “For me it was the best and most beautiful season of my entire career. I have never felt more comfortable in a place than in Newcastle.

"The cooperation in the team and with the coaching staff is unprecedented. I feel a great sense of happiness and a lot of gratitude for being able to experience this phase.

“He’s (Howe) the best coach of my career. It’s difficult to define in just one area. He has so many good facets. His training theory is first class, there is not even a hint of boredom in any meeting."

Shearer's next target

Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer says the club must make silverware their next objective after a brilliant campaign. Eddie Howe's side reached the Carabao Cup Final and will play Champions League football for the first time in 20 years next season.

Shearer admits next season will be tougher for Howe and his men with the summer a defining factor. He told William Hill at the FWA Awards: "Newcastle have had an unbelievable season. The job that Eddie Howe and his staff have done has just been incredible and they deserve it.

"They’ve played some great football, they’ve been tough, hard to beat, but they’ve been entertaining and they’ve got St James’ Park rocking again so long may that continue.

“Next season will be a tough one but it will be interesting to see what happens in the summer in terms of who they are going to get rid of and bring in, and how much they are going to spend. What’s next for Newcastle is to go and win a trophy.

"They nearly did it this year, it was great to be back at Wembley but what happened [losing to Manchester United in the League Cup final] was obviously disappointing so winning a trophy is what’s next because that’s what is missing.”
