Rio Ferdinand highlights problem Newcastle's Callum Wilson may face in realising World Cup dream
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes Newcastle United forward Callum Wilson's past injury record could count against him when it comes to making the England World Cup squad.
Much has been made over who should back-up Harry Kane out in Qatar, with Wilson and a number of other contenders vying for a place in Gareth Southgate's squad.
Ivan Toney, Tammy Abraham, Marcus Rashford and Dominic Calvert-Lewin will all likely be in the Southgate's thoughts alongside Wilson, but there can be no doubt the Newcastle striker is leading the way when it comes to current form.
'Deathly silent' - Everything changes at Newcastle as players get emotional at training ground
Newcastle United players and staff are 'deathly silent' in the canteen at the training ground. It is a couple of days before the final home game of last season against Arsenal and Wor Flags are giving a presentation to their heroes about the cost and time that goes into each display. These four supporters have not been invited to speak to the group for the fun of it; this has all been carefully planned as group member Thomas Concannon explained.
"Eddie Howe told us he was looking at ways to keep the players inspired and keep their minds focused until the end of the season," Concannon recalled to ChronicleLive. "He thought it was a really good fit to get us in and have a chat with the players and meet them. It was all his idea to keep things fresh for the team."
It certainly kept things fresh, all right. Newcastle, inspired by the electric atmosphere Wor Flags helped to create, went on to defeat a spooked Arsenal 2-0. Clearly, no side enjoys coming to St James' Park anymore; in fact, no team relishes facing the Magpies full stop as Spurs found to their cost at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last month.
Alan Shearer backs calls for major rule change after incident in Newcastle United win
Emiliano Martinez's head injury at Newcastle United on Saturday has prompted renewed calls for 'temporary concussion substitutions' to be introduced in top level football. The Aston Villa stopper took a blow to the head after colliding with defender Tyrone Mings but was allowed to continue after a check by the club's medical staff.
Moments later Martinez was back on the ground complaining of his head injury and was eventually forced off and replaced by Robin Olsen. Since then, the PFA have called for temporary withdrawals to be sanctioned by the Premier League.
Dr Adam White, head of the PFA’s brain health department, told PA: “Put simply, the current laws of the game are jeopardising player health and safety.
Newcastle launch search for new addition to help increase transfer funds and provide FFP boost
Newcastle United are searching for a commercial partnerships executive as the club look to boost revenues to comply with Financial Fair Play.
CEO Darren Eales has said, himself, that the club need 'increased commercial revenues' to get the 'best team out on the pitch'. Newcastle may be flying in fourth place in the table at the moment, but there is quite a gap for the Magpies to bridge on the top six off the field in that regard.
In fact, Newcastle were so stripped down in the final weeks of the Ashley era that Brentford were miles ahead in terms of numbers with 84 administration and commercial employees. The club's new owners have since sought to give these departments the additional support they have long needed.
Alan Shearer names four Newcastle United players in Premier League team of the week
Newcastle United players dominate Alan Shearer’s Premier League team of the week after the thrilling 4-0 win against Aston Villa. Another impressive top-flight performance led the Magpies’ all-time leading goalscorer to litter his line-up with Toon stars.
Kieran Trippier, Joelinton, Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson made the cut after helping Newcastle destroy Villa at St James’ Park. The win kept Eddie Howe’s side in fourth spot and further ignited hopes of a potential push for Europe.
Elsewhere in the line-up, Shearer selected three Arsenal players following their 5-0 rout over Nottingham Forest. William Saliba, Thomas Partey and Reiss Nelson were selected, with the latter bagging twice on his first league appearance of the campaign.
