Here are the latest Newcastle United evening headlines on Friday, June 3.
Zaniolo 'rejects' Toon despite being transfer listed
Attacking reinforcements are on the agenda at St James’ Park this summer with Newcastle short on wide midfielders. Nicolo Zaniolo was said to be one of the players being targeted by the Magpies as there was an understanding that he would be available for the right price.
According to Sky Sport Italia, Roma have placed the Italian on the transfer list but the player himself is not willing to move outside of his home country, ruling out a move to the North-east. The attacking midfielder, who scored the only goal of the inaugural Europa Conference League final, is understood to be on the market for around €50m and he prefers a move to either AC Milan or Juventus.
Wilson makes Joelinton ‘moment of the season’ claim
Joelinton’s transformation into a deeper midfield role proved to be one of Eddie Howe’s many managerial masterstrokes in the second half of the season. He was awarded the club’s Player of the Season award and was overwhelmingly voted the same by Chronicle Live readers.

Callum Wilson claimed that the decision to change the Brazilian into a centre midfielder was the turning point in an ultimately successful season for United. Speaking to NUFC TV, the Magpies striker said: “Moment of the season, I think, was probably Joelinton switching into midfield. I feel that it was a turning point for him in his career and for him in his Newcastle career definitely.
“It helped the team massively, he’s been a great addition to the midfield, he’s solid and he looks more comfortable there. He’s been our player of the season because of that. I definitely think that was the moment of the season.”

Hendrick makes big admission regarding Toon future
Jeff Hendrick has revealed that it is unlikely he will play for Newcastle again with a summer departure on the cards. He spent the second half of the season on loan at QPR after he was deemed surplus to requirements at St James’ Park by Eddie Howe in January.
“I don’t know if it will be a fresh start,” said the Republic of Ireland international. "Newcastle have done really well and brought some good players in and I can admit their midfield is very strong with the additions in January.
“I’m not the club, I’m not doing the buying or whatever, but I’d imagine they will strengthen the whole squad again in the summer. For me it’s about being realistic and being prepared that I might need to go somewhere else for games. I have two years left at Newcastle.
“For me, I’m ready to go back on July 1 and start training and if I need to go and get games, I will do that. It’s something I want to do, I always want to play games and I’ll wait and see.”
