Newcastle United news as European clubs in race to sign Isaac Hayden, Magpies interested in Blackburn defender

Here are your Newcastle United transfer rumours on Saturday, February 5.

European clubs interested in Hayden

A number of European clubs are reportedly interested in signing Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden.

That's according to TEAMTalk, who claim that the Sparta Prague and Basel are amongst those keen on the 26-year-old after he was left out of the Magpies' Premier League squad.

Eddie Howe named his 25-man contingent for the remainder of the campaign on Thursday afternoon, with Hayden, Ciaran Clark and Jamal Lewis missing out in place of Dan Burn, Bruno Guimaraes and Matt Targett.

This has led to speculation about Hayden's future, although he is currently out with a long-term injury which could keep him out for at least couple more weeks.

Meanwhile, Spartak Moscow, Lokomotiv Moscow and Sochi have been named as clubs who are plotting a move for the former Arsenal youngster.

Turkish clubs are also keen, including struggling Galatasaray and this could also be the landing spot for Lewis given that he has been left out of the squad.

Newcastle 'express Lenihan interest'

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in a move for Blackburn Rovers centre-back Darragh Lenihan.

The Ireland international is out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked to a whole host of Premier League clubs ahead of a possible summer switch from Ewood Park.

TEAMtalk claim Newcastle, Aston Villa and Leeds United have all "registered their interest" in the defender.

The report adds that Lenihan would only consider signing a new deal with Rovers if they are promoted this season.

Tony Mowbray's side are currently sitting second in the Championship, just a point inside the automatic promotion positions after playing 29 games.

The 27-year-old has scored twice in 28 appearances for Blackburn this season and has made a total of 238 appearances for the club after debuting back in 2015.

McClaren on Newcastle's business

Former Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren has delivered his verdict on the Magpies' January transfer window.

Eddie Howe's side ended up spending £93million on new recruits, with Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes, Dan Burn and Matt Targett all joining the club.

It's the most the club has ever spent in January and McClaren believes it was a 'fantastic' window despite missing out on Hugo Ekiteke and Jesse Lingard on Deadline Day.

Speaking on The McClaren Performance podcast, he stated: "I think it’s a fantastic window."

He added: "When you’ve got five or six new players coming in, it freshens everybody with competition for the dressing room and it’s like throwing a bomb in there.

"I always like that now and again. Not if you’re settled, but now and again. It needs a bomb because players now will wonder, ‘What’s the pecking order all of a sudden. I was the top dog. I was the number nine. Now, Wood’s coming in."
