Newcastle United news as Eddie Howe faces crunch time before 2022 World Cup

Here are the Newcastle United evening headlines on Monday, September 19.

Newcastle United's season to be shaped over crucial 42 days as Eddie Howe faces key period

Newcastle United are now facing a crunch 42-day period that will shape their season ahead of the unprecedented World Cup break in November. When players return from international duty in the build-up to the clash at Fulham on October 1, the trip to Craven Cottage will be the first of nine matches before the tournament in Qatar.

There will be 24 points available to Eddie Howe and the chance to keep one pathway to Wembley in the League Cup open going into the winter. In short, the 42-day run of matches will be a major test to a squad that have already felt the strain of a high-octane season so far with key stars like Allan Saint-Maximin, Callum Wilson, Bruno Guimaraes and Jonjo Shelvey breaking down in the summer months alone.

Newcastle United star Sven Botman told why he was benched for a third time in seven games

Eddie Howe has explained why Sven Botman was benched for Newcastle United's 1-1 draw with AFC Bournemouth.

The Dutchman - who knocked on Howe's door when left out of the opening game against Nottingham Forest - found himself named as a substitute against the Cherries with Dan Burn picked ahead of him. But Howe has explained why he decided to make a change despite the fact Botman had helped Newcastle to a clean sheet against Crystal Palace only a fortnight ago.

He said: "We managed their load in the week where we had three games, so that was bringing Dan back."

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe earns pundit's Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp comparisons

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has been compared to Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp by former Premier League defender Stephen Warnock despite their frustrating 1-1 draw against Bournemouth at the weekend.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Warnock credited Howe's ability to bolster the Magpies squad in the transfer market after doubts he'd be able to spend money wisely enough after his dealings as Cherries boss.

"I think he has grown, I think it's been a steady increase in what he's put in place here. I think there was a lot of doubt about Eddie Howe when he came, people were saying 'Is he the right man?' and it almost seemed like the owners wanted to go for a bigger name."
