Newcastle United need just one point to book Champions League spot as Liverpool drop two points

Newcastle United now need just a point to qualify for the Champions League after Liverpool were held at home to Aston Villa.

Although, Liverpool would need to see Newcastle lose both of their last two matches and notch a major goal difference boost away to Southampton in their final game to overtake them.

On a nervous day at Anfield, Ollie Watkins put a penalty wide for Villa in the first half on 22 minutes. But Villa went ahead five minutes later after poor defending from the Reds with Jacob Ramsey taking advantage following a Douglas Luiz cross.

Villa went in ahead at the break after Liverpool piled on the pressure during eight minutes of stoppage time. The second half saw a Liverpool goal chalked off for an offside thanks to VAR with Cody Gakpo thinking he'd levelled things up. However, a 90th minute equaliser from Roberto Firmino earned Jurgen Klopp's side a point.

Newcastle are still locked level on 69 points with Manchester United after the Red Devils won at Bournemouth but the Magpies have a better goal difference. A draw or a win against Leicester at St James' Park would avoid the race going to the final day.
