Newcastle United linked with move for former Mapgies forward as striker search continues

Newcastle United are reportedly weighing up the prospect of re-signing Ivan Toney as they look to bolster their attacking options. Another striker continues to be one of Eddie Howe’s top priorities as the 2022/23 Premier League campaign edges ever closer.

It looked for much of the summer as though Hugo Ekitike would be the man to fill the void at St James’ Park but he instead signed for Paris Saint-Germain. That has left United looking elsewhere for a striker as they want to add competition, and cover, for Callum Wilson whose injury problems have been very well documented over the last few years.

According to The Sun, Toney has returned to the radar on Tyneside four years after leaving the club for Peterborough. During his time in the north east, he made just four first-team appearances and has hardly endeared himself to the Magpies fans since departing.

After scoring in the 3-3 draw between his current club and former club last season, the 26-year-old made it clear to kiss the Brentford badge on his shirt in front of the Gallowgate End. Although, that seemingly hasn’t deterred the interest from the Magpies who continue to be linked with a £30m move for the Bees frontman.

The same report states that Leeds are also interested in adding Toney to their squad with another striker at the very top of their remaining transfer priorities. Like Howe, Jesse Marsch already has a recognised first-choice number nine in Patrick Bamford but the American often favours formations with two strikers so could look to use both simultaneously.

Manchester United and West Ham also continue to be linked with Toney as they both look to add a striker to their ranks ahead of the upcoming season. The 12 goals and five assists registered by the Brentford star in his debut Premier League campaign clearly caught the eye and a transfer battle may ensue should any of the top-flight clubs formalise their interest.
