Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer makes '7-0' claim after Manchester United victory

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has claimed that the Magpies should have beaten Manchester United '7-0' after Eddie Howe's side ran out 2-0 winners against the Red Devils at St James' Park.

Victory over their top four rivals saw Newcastle move up into third place on goal difference. They currently sit one point clear of Tottenham in fourth place ahead of Spurs' game against Everton on Monday night, with a game in hand over the North London side.

After a frustrating first-half that saw the hosts do everything but find the back of the net, Joe Willock's close-range effort in the 65th minute sparked pandemonium in the crowd as their dominance finally paid off. Callum Wilson's first goal since February just two minutes from time secured all three points after he smartly headed home a Kieran Trippier free-kick.

It was a finish that Shearer would have been proud of and the Newcastle legend was delighted to see his former side take revenge on Man United following the Carabao Cup heartbreak at Wembley in February. But the former forward did not stop there, as he believed that Howe's team could have added five more to their total such was their superiority to Erik ten Hag's squad.

Taking to social media, he wrote: "Could/Should have been 7-0!! Oh I’ve cheered up #NEWMUN."

With just Arsenal left to play of the current top four, Sunday afternoon's victory has seen Newcastle take a huge step forward in their bid to return to the Champions League for the first time in 20 years.
