Lucas de Bolle got his first taste of the Scottish Championship in Hamilton’s 2-0 defeat at home to Queen’s Park, and reckons finishing chances was the difference.
The 19-year-old midfielder is at New Douglas Park on a season-long loan from English Premier League club Newcastle United, and intends to make the most of it.
And despite the defeat, de Bolle says his new side didn’t perform badly against the Spiders, but weren’t clinical enough.
De Bolle, who replaced Dario Zanatta in 71 minutes, said: “I enjoyed it, definitely. That was my first taste of the Scottish Championship, I thought everyone played well, but we didn’t take our chances like them.
“But I was impressed with our performance and I think we just have to build on it, for sure.
“I’m focused on this season with Hamilton, helping them climb the league helping them get towards the play-offs, and just gain experience, improve my game, and then ultimately that will help the team to get points.
“Men’s football, competitive, stuff like this, you can see how much it means to everyone when we don’t win.
“It’s definitely an improvement on reserve football and I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season.”
De Bolle’s Accies career was delayed by recovery protocols, having suffered a concussion during his last game for Newcastle reserves before making the switch.
Having a free weekend – with a postponement of Hamilton’s Challenge Cup third round clash against Rangers ‘B’ – means more time for the Scot to pick up on his fitness, before welcoming Dundee to Lanarkshire on October 1.
De Bolle said: “That will definitely help me.
“I’ve only done a couple of sessions in the last couple of weeks, so I need to get more in throughout the week.
“That will definitely help with my fitness, and then hopefully prepare me to play more minutes – if I’m needed.
“Some of the lads have told me about the importance of the Dundee game.
“We’ve got a week of no games, so hopefully we can prepare ourselves right for it.”
