Eddie Howe has admitted that anything but the best performance from his Newcastle United side will not be enough to beat Liverpool on Saturday. He would have wanted a couple of his injured players back to full fitness for such a big test but the visit of Jurgen Klopp’s side is likely to come too soon.
Although, the United boss has been able to deal brilliantly so far without a couple of players who would usually be among the first names on the team sheet. Both Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson remain out of action but are nearing respective returns as the season reaches its climax.
Speaking to the media in his pre-Liverpool press conference, Howe said: “Kieran and Callum are getting closer but don't think they'll be ready for tomorrow. Kieran has had one session on grass, Callum is getting there."

After playing key roles on the pitch and off it this season, it would be great for the pair to be able to turn out in front of the fans at St James’ Park again before the end of the season. Fitness permitting, they will be two of the players at the forefront of the club’s expected mini rebuild ahead of next term.
Elsewhere, Ryan Fraser has returned to training but won’t be involved as Howe alluded to the precaution that must be taken with a hamstring injury. He said: "Ryan has been on the grass but he’s not trained. We’re taking it careful with him. Hamstring injuries can be difficult. Will he play again this season? I’m not sure at this moment in time."
The only other two absentees are Jamal Lewis and Isaac Hayden who may not feature for United again this season. Although, Howe did mention last week Hayden’s desire to get back amongst the squad before the end of the season.
Speaking on April 22, the Magpies manager said: "Hopefully, he is due to train next week. We'll look at him, judge his performances in training and see what happens from there. He has worked tirelessly and professionally to get very fit."
Meanwhile, a string of operations for Lewis on his ongoing groin problem look to have curtailed his season, and possibly his career at the club, early. However, Howe did admit that he wants to see the Northern Ireland international in pre-season to judge whether or not he is of the required quality to have a future on Tyneside.
